In 2019 Sikhs all over the world came together to celebrate the 550th birth of the first Sikh Guru and founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Born at Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, Guru Nanak Dev Ji established a way of life which eradicated rituals, caste system, and inequality amongst mankind. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught the world there is 1 God, everlasting in truth who is the creator, sustainer and destroyer of all, and within every living being.
The Sikh community of Croydon came together on the 9th November 2019 at Park Hill Park, Croydon for the opening ceremony of a tree that was planted to commemorate this auspicious occasion. Children and adults all took part in singing Simran, Shabad Kirtan, and recited Jap ji Sahib Path written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The Sangat were grateful as we were joined by the Mayor of Croydon, Humayun Kabir who officially opened the tree on behalf of the community.
